The Algarve has established itself as the most popular destination for the British holiday golfer. This is largely due to the quality of its golf courses which continue to thrive and develop. The Portuguese have been shrewd in understanding what it takes to develop a high quality golf destination, the majority of courses have been built with low density property development, which rarely encroaches on areas where a loose hit shot could finish.

The Portuguese have also been dealt a helpful hand with the quality of the land at their disposal. In the main it’s gently rolling, sand based and populated by umbrella Pine trees. Add to this a dramatic coastline of cliffs, bays and miles of vast sandy beaches washed by the rolling Atlantic, then you get some idea of what you will experience during a golf holiday in the Algarve.

Courses such as Vilamoura Old, San Lorenzo, Quinta do Lago & Vale do Lobo are known by many for their quality and picturesque layouts. More recently the Algarve has seen the addition of courses designed by famous Professionals such as Jack Nicklaus’s Monte Rei course near Tavira, Arnold Palmer’s Vilamoura Victoria course and Nick Faldo & Christy O’Connor’s courses at Amendoeira.

As the gradual pace of golf developments has increased in the last ten years, so has the number of quality hotels and resorts, accompanied by many fine restaurants and stylish bars. Vilamoura with its chic marina and Albufeira are the most popular resorts for golfers looking for some lively night-life. Quinta do Lago & Vale do Lobo offer slightly more sophisticated surroundings and many fine restaurants.

There are two premier golf hotels in the Algarve, the Dona Filipa in Vale do Lobo and Penina which lies to the west near Alvor - both are firm favourites with British golfers. New hotels such as the Vila Sol Resort near Vilamoura have also become very popular. The Algarve continues to offer great value and a superb golfing experience 

AM’s Opinion
The Algarve is a great destination for a golf holiday. The quality of the courses are second to none, there are plenty of flights to Faro providing the option of short golf breaks from most UK airports, and the warm hospitality that the Portuguese show to visiting golfers has always been appreciated by the British.
