When Quinta do Lago originally opened in 1974 it was a 27 hole layout consisting of three 9 hole loops, A, B & C. In 1989 nine holes were added and the courses were split into two 18 hole layouts, the North and South courses, which share the same clubhouse facilities. In 2008 the Laranjal course opened, which is situated on a different piece of land to the north of the Quinta do Lago estate. All three are top class courses, indeed the South course hosted the Portuguese Open on eight occasions between 1974 & 2001.
QUINTA DO LAGO NORTH The Quinta do Lago North course is a very enjoyable course to play. Built on gently undulating forest land, the sandy soil provides a great base for the fairways and greens. In the spring the rough is covered with a blanket of wild flowers, heather and gorse. The course favours players who can draw the ball as it follows in an anti clockwise loop with several right to left doglegs. As with the South course, there are numerous luxury villas dotted around the course, all of them sit well back from the fairways and are generally hidden by the umbrellas pines. A feature of the North course are the numerous fairway and greenside bunkers. It’s a good test for all abilities.
QUINTA DO LAGO SOUTH Quinta do Lago South is considered by some to be the premier course, however, there is very little to call between the South and North courses. The South course hosted the Portuguese Open on eight occasions between 1976 and 2001 and generally provides more views of the coast and Ria Formosa tidal inlet. The South course is also played in an anti clockwise loop, favouring players who can draw the ball, although on the back nine there are a number of left to right doglegs which require a fade from the tee. This is also a very enjoyable course and is situated in on a picturesque piece of land where the forest meets the coast.
LARANJAL The Laranjal course is distinctly different to the Quinta do Lago North & South courses. It’s been built on a piece of land that was originally an Orangery, indeed a number of orange trees are scattered throughout the course. Essentially this is a parkland layout enhanced by five large lakes which are a major feature of the course. Another interesting feature is that it has five par 3’s and five par 5’s. Visually it’s very striking with lush green fairways, white sandy bunkers and beautifully shaped lakes that sparkle in the sun. It’s a relatively flat course that plays its full distance, and the narrow fairways add to its difficulty.
