Canary Islands

If you are looking for a destination that can almost guarantee to provide a perfect golfing climate at anytime of the year then the Canary Islands should be high on your list. With temperatures regularly in the low twenties centigrade or seventies fahrenheit, particularly in the winter months, the Canary Islands provide the ideal climate to enjoy your golf and sample some very interesting courses.  

Tenerife is the most popular of the islands and has the largest number of courses with seven. Most of these are concentrated in the south of the island close to popular tourist resorts of Playa de Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje.

Their are two prestigious golf resorts in Tenerife. ABAMA lies to west of Costa Adeje and has an impressive hotel and spectacular 18 hole championship course. Las Madrigueras is a boutique style adult only hotel, which sits on the Las Americas course providing direct access to the 1st tee for hotel residents.

Fuerteventura is the most southerly of the Canary Islands, located just 100 km from the north coast of Africa and on the same latitude as Florida and Mexico. Not surprisingly it has a warm climate and temperatures rarely fall below 18°C.  The island is a favourite destination for surfers and windsurfers and is famous for its white sandy beaches, which combined stretch for over 50 kms.

With the opening of the Fuerteventura golf course in 2002 and Salinas in 2006, the island has become popular with golfers seeking some guaranteed winter sunshine. The courses are located next door to each other and the Elba Palace Hotel is located on the Fuerteventura course and is also the clubhouse.

AM’s Opinion

The Canary Islands courses have to cope with the disadvantage of being built on volcanic rock, however they do this very well and provide some challenging and interesting layouts. The winter months are high season which usually means there is more going on than in some of the major resorts on mainland Spain and Portugal.
