The two Aroeira courses have a lot of similarities due to the fact that they were both carved through a pine forest, however one was designed by Frank Pennick and the other by Donald Steel, which has given them each a distinctive character of their own. If you have the opportunity to play both courses there is sure to be some debate after your rounds as to which is the better course! AROEIRA 1 (Images 1 - 4) The Aroeira 1 course, designed by Frank Pennick, is a real joy to play. Cut through a Pine forest at 6300 yards of the Yellow tees it’s not too long, however at least nine of the holes are doglegs and therefore require precision driving. The 14th is a lovely 150 yard par three over water to the green. The 15th is great hole, a par five that requires a drive up a rise, it then drops round a dogleg to a green tightly guarded by water and bunkers. Aroeira 2 is the younger of two courses and was designed by Donald Steel. At 6500 yards off the Yellow tees it’s a wee bit longer than Aroeira 1 and it’s also a little more open, although water comes into play on at least seven holes. There are many good holes, however our pick of the best are the 7th, a short par four with water bordering almost the entire right hand side of the fairway. The 15th is another fun par four with plenty of water to avoid. However, arguably the best hole is the par five 18th, a great finishing hole.
